Depeche Mode 101 Celebrates Its 20th Anniversary
On June 18th, 1988 over 60,000 people gathered at the Pasadena Rose Bowl to see and to hear electro-sob-rockers Depeche Mode pump out their well-polished dance singles at a "Concert for the Masses". D.A. Pennebaker's gorgeous documentary Depeche Mode 101 captures Depeche just as they were wrapping up their world tour in support of the excellent and now legendary album Music for the Masses. "101" gives you the feeling the band had sort of reached their full potential.
That's rich. Full potential? No. Two years later they would deliver Violator and, well, you know...sort of take over the entire world.

George Michael Really Thrilled About California Gays Getting Married
Imagine that.
The openly-gay Father Figure with the world's most incredibly perfect facial hair is about to come and tour in a very different America. It's been seventeen years since Michael last toured the States and it doesn't seem to concern him that he might be passed his prime; he's just happy the Cali. homosexual community can finally tie the knot.
Yes, that's good news.
But what's bad news is that rather than putting out a new album, George Michael hurled another "best of" at us called TwentyFive...as if we wouldn't notice that it was a pretty sorry repeat of the outstanding 1998 Ladies & Gentlemen: The Best of George Michael.
Note to Mr. George Michael: If you're not gonna spend the time releasing a new studio album, could you please spend the time re-mastering, re-packaging, and re-issuing the WHAM! catalog? Thanks.

The Cure's 13th Studio Album: A Double One?
Probably. Smith says it's likely that two versions of the new album will be released. One will be a deliciously lengthy double album mixed by Smith himself. The other will be a single disc version mixed by someone Smith probably doesn't like or care about. GET THE FULL SKINNY HERE

Goo Goo Dolls To Release Greatest Hits Vol. 2: Holy God, How Boring.
Wait, a Goo Goo Dolls Greatest Hits Vol. 2 implies that there must have been a Volume 1...who knew? Or better yet, who cares? I sure don't. Can you imagine anything more boring and superfluous than a Goo Goo Dolls Greatest Hits Vol. 2? I can't.
Actually, a greatest hits compilation from Bush would be pretty awful too. Even worse would be a solo album from Bush front man Gavin Rossdale, which he has done. You can sample that heaping pile of mediocrity here: www.gavinrossdale.com

Bonnie Raitt - "Nick of Time"

I heard this song for the first time in almost five years the other day; it stopped me in my tracks because I had forgotten how much I adored it. I was only six years old when "Nick of Time" was first being played on the radio, but I can remember loving it even then. All of Raitt's work reminds me of my mother, especially "Nick of Time". That may be 50% of the reason I love it so much, but the other 50% is because it's a beautiful lyrical take on a classic theme: live each day to its fullest. Raitt's vocals are incredible and her guitar work is perfect, per usual.
